July 4th weekend!

This weekend we decided to get out of town and head to Chicago! I haven't been to Chicago in several years so I was excited to go and enjoy the weekend away. We booked an Air BNB a few miles outside of city in a neighborhood called Pilsen, which is prominently Mexican. The gal got good reviews so we went for it.

We arrived Friday night around 9:15 and found the apartment. We were hungry so we decided to go to a Mexican place that had a patio.  On our way back, there was some words exchanged at one of the intersections. People were yelling and one guy took off pretty fast. The cops  were there in no time and everyone scattered. I was afraid we were going to witness a shootout!

Saturday morning we got up and rented a bike and rode to Lake Shore Drive. We knew we wanted to run so the trail was perfect! So many bikes and so many runners...I loved it!

We ended up running right through downtown along the riverwalk until it ended. 5 miles and we were done. I had 10 miles on my marathon training calendar for Saturday but we decided to split it up. We needed coffee ASAP so we found Einstein Bros. Bagels and re-fueled. Right across the street was Harry Carry's.

We had plans to go back to the apartment and change but decided to wander the city all day.

We ended up on Michigan Ave then up to the John Hancock Building. The 360 view was amazing!

The weather was just perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Our next stop, Navy Pier. We had to ride the Ferris wheel :-) The crowds weren't as bad as we had thought. Being 4th of July weekend, it could have been worse. Next stop, was the bean.

The fireworks were going off at 10:15 at the Navy Pier so we had a few hours to kill. Walking around the city with no plans was so fun! We stopped at a cute little table and chair set in the middle of city to rest and took in the sights.

Sunday we got up and ran another 5 miles before we had to be in the suburbs to visit Carl's family.

Overall it was an awesome weekend and we can't wait to go back! We have already started to plan our next long weekend getaway ;-) What did you all do this weekend?
